Museum Folkwang is showcasing works by artists from the Ukrainian artist collective Asortymentna Kimnata (Assortment Room). In the spring of 2022, shortly after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Kiev-based artist and curator Lesia Khomenko contacted the organisers of the gallery space Asortymentna Kimnata in Ivano Frankivsk and initiated the artistic residency “The Working Room” there. She was keen to create a retreat for artists who were forced to flee from disputed areas but wanted to stay in Ukraine. Today, 17 artists are members of the collective in Ivano Frankivsk and other places in western Ukraine.

What is depicted here? reflects on the current state of crisis in Ukraine and the living conditions that inevitably accompany it. Curated by Lesia Khomenko, the exhibition is accompanied by texts that were developed jointly by the collective and fill the entire exhibition space. Paintings, photographs, and video works by the individual artists round out the show, which is not only an artistic statement, but also a collective sign of resistance.
